Biography: Hyun-Woo Park is an upstart politician from the Koreatown area of NYC. His general issue profile and policy stances led to him being overall considered as a moderate by his party and the public at-large, with the nature and timing of his primary challenge rubbing many in the progressive wing of the party the wrong way. He upset the incumbent in a highly competitive and acrimonious primary election, mainly through consolidating the Korean vote across party lines, appealing to the business community, and convincing the public that it was time for new blood in the district.
Park grew up in New York and attended Harvard, graduating from its prestigious business school with an MBA. He went on to manage investments, eventually founding his own firm which specialized in serving Korean-American clients, as well as those seeking to invest in Korean companies abroad. He was highly successful in this niche market and proceeded to reinvest much of his wealth into the community, creating a local scholarship fund as well as being an "angel" investor for start-up businesses. He also donates much of his income to charities and Buddhist shrines across New York. Because of these things, he is well-respected in the tight-knit Koreatown community. He is married, with two daughters and a son.
